URPIMA SEA ISLAND® and STEFAN BRANDT SEA ISLAND®
Classified among the best extra-long staples (ELS) of the world.
PROLOGUE
Sea Island cotton is universally recognized as the finest cotton in the world with the greatest fiber length. Archaeology and carbon dating provide evidence that Gossypium barbadense (“Black Seed”) was first domesticated in the early Valdivia civilization on the coast of Ecuador 4,400 years ago.
The “black seed” thrives only under specific climatic and soil conditions, which is how Ecuador became its cradle 4,400 years ago. The equatorial climate zone, with its high yet constant temperatures throughout the year and evenly distributed rainfall, offers ideal growing conditions, thus giving rise to this treasure of unparalleled beauty. And it was here, at the historical place of origin, that it was rediscovered by Stefan Brandt in 2012, growing wild on the edge of a road in the former Valdivia Region.

A BOLD DECISION
In the quest for utmost control over quality, Stefan Brandt made the bold decision in 2012 to grow his own luxury Sea Island Cotton at its historic origin in Ecuador, starting with URPIMA SEA ISLAND ® in 2022. In March 2025, he brought the original “black seed” from the West Indies back to its natural habitat in Ecuador, where – as expected – it thrives noticeably better than anywhere else in the world, boasting a staple-length of more than 50 millimeters (with a classification staple of 2.5%), surpassing the qualitative spearhead in global cotton cultivation. Today, Stefan Brandt Sea Island® cotton reigns supreme as the rarest and most valuable variety in the world, followed by URPIMA SEA ISLAND ® in second place in the world database with a staple-length of more than 45 millimeters (with a classification staple of 2.5%).
This luxurious cotton possesses unmatched softness, while its natural luster adds a silky sheen. Impeccable uniformity and cohesion result in a yarn of unparalleled value, often referred to as the silk of South America.
THE HOLY GRAIL
With the arrival at its birthplace, where it all began, a new era is beginning. But this era is not only about unrivaled fiber length – it is much more.
Our selective hand-picking of only mature fibers – over an unprecedented 50-day period – guarantees maximum fiber quality and the super-soft, silky feel of the product. Damage and contamination of the fiber, which occurs during machine harvesting, is avoided. Stefan Brandt knew that only a particularly elaborate cotton boll ginning process with original English machines from PLATT BROTHERS would allow the most gentle separation of the cotton fibers from the seeds. These original machines are not often found outside of museums, however, the exceptional level of quality that they produce makes them invaluable for this hand-picked cotton of highest fineness. Stefan Brandt set off on an adventurous search for this fascinating ‘sartorial’ invention, which enables the leap in quality from excellence to the superlative by giving the world’s most precious cotton the most gentle ginning treatment. After two years of persistent searching, he actually came across the ‘Holy Grail’ of the last PLATT BROTHERS machines in private ownership. When these machines and their predecessors were still in use, they produced the knickerbocker fabrics made from Sea Island cotton for the British royal family, and were then stored behind heavy vault doors. Sea Island cotton for Queen Victoria’s handkerchiefs was also processed using these machines. Today, they are an indispensable requisite for the measurably and tangibly unrivaled SEA ISLAND® cotton from Stefan Brandt.
The result is a luxury cotton, so soft and luxurious, with a feel of cashmere or silk, and the strength of cotton. The likes of which has never existed before in the history of mankind.
The ecological footprint of the plantations is minimal, as the cotton grows ideally in its natural habitat, without having to draw in new rivers.
HISTORIC DIMENSION
The project is a historic turning point, as the plantations can be scaled to several tens of thousands of hectares and it is to be expected that this luxury cotton will be declared a national sanctuary of Ecuador.
VERTICALITY
A completely vertical supply chain like Stefan Brandt’s is extremely rare these days. From the finest, hand-picked SEA ISLAND® cotton from our own plantations at the historic origin of true Sea Island cotton in Ecuador, to the production of globally-unique fabrics using disruptive processes, through to the design, sartorial production and sale of the goods: everything is under one roof. This extraordinary constellation, combined with Stefan Brandt’s uncompromising insistence on perfection in all stages of production, is the guarantee for the quality advantage of these unique products.
It often takes courage to question common techniques and processes and to create something new. Stefan Brandt had the courage, the know-how, and the stamina and, as a pioneer, developed innovative techniques that give his products tangible and measurable unique selling points. Today, his innovations are regarded as ground-breaking in the fashion industry.
